Expanding Your Child's Opportunities to Learn and Achieve

 

Spring Classes

 

Mind Lab

An innovative hands-on program that teaches kids HOW to think through carefully selected international games.  Children will learn the fundamentals of planning, program solving, decision making, teamwork, and communication.

Grades K- 8              Tuesdays 3:30- 4:30 K- 2 at the Blackstone River Theatre

                                Tuesdays 5:30- 6:30 3-5, 6-8 at OCYL location

Cost $50, 6 Weeks April 29- June 3, 2008

 

Music and Movement

Explore musical development in your child.  Activities evolve from the child’s world and include vocal play, sounds, rhythm, language development and a good bit of genuine, silly fun while we develop competence in tonality and rhythm.  Classes build and expand experiences with each session.

Ages 4- 6                  Wednesdays Class I             11:30- 12:15 pm

                                Wednesdays Class II/ III      10:30- 11:15 am

                                Wednesdays Class IV/ V      9:30- 10:15 am

Cost $25, 6 Weeks April 30- June 4, 2008

 

Pizza Pie Gardening   It’s Pizza time!  At Historic Metcalf Franklin Farm children will learn from our Horticultural expert the real dirt about growing vegetables.  Biology (seed, plant identification of parts and growing cycle) Nutrients (plant growth), Photosynthesis and environmental science will be introduced to students. Children are invited to come out to tend the garden throughout the summer.  The Pizza Garden will have a harvest day in August where the vegetables will be baked into a pizza pie!

Ages 6 and older (younger siblings welcome with Parents)

Saturday, May 17, 2008, 9am -11am

Cost $5 per family

 

Eco Fort Think you’re ready to build a fort?  Children will use bamboo stakes to create a fort of Morning Glories and Moon Flowers.  These vine growers will learn about the differences between native and invasive plants, biology, and environmental science needed for our fort. This program is designed for ages 8 and older.  Children will be welcome to come back to check progress and hang out in the fort at Historic Metcalf- Franklin Farm all summer long!

Cost $5 (with a maximum charge of $10 per family)

Childhood Literacy course

Cumberland Office of Children Youth and Learning is now taking pre-registration for an exciting new Early Childhood Literacy course.  This eight week course is designed to get 4-6 year old Cumberland kids reading.  Its perfect for everyone from 4 year-old non-readers to your kindergarteners already beginning to read.  This curriculum was created at the prestigious Bank Street School for graduate education in New York.  It will be taught by certified Rhode Island teachers with Masters degrees in literacy.

We will be offering this course beginning in late March.  You can sign up for one of two possible sessions:

Tuesdays and Thursdays 9am-11am
or
Tuesdays and Thursdays 1pm-3pm

MISSION
The Cumberland Office of Children Youth and Learning (OCYL) is a municipal department created by Mayor Daniel McKee and established by ordinance in February 2007.  It is the first of its kind in Rhode   Island.  Its mission is to help foster a comprehensive learning environment for children in the first two
decades of their lives while promoting youth civic engagement.

GOALS
OCYL's goal is for every Cumberland child to become a skilled learner with a creative mind who achieves to his or her fullest potential.  The OCYL is creating highly effective and accountable after-school programming.  OCYL's Youth Civic Engagement Initiative is teaching teens to be good local and global citizens.

CUMBERLAND YOUTH COMMISSION
First of it's kind in Rhode Island, the Cumberland Youth Commission is the liaison to the Mayor on youth issues.  Its mission is to promote improved quality of life for Cumberland youth through programs, projects and advocacy.
