For an after-hour emergency, please call the Cumberland Police Department at (401) 333-2500. They will contact the Sewer Superintendent who will return your call within 15 minutes.

Dig Safe®

SAFETY FIRST. BEFORE any excavation, please contact the Sewer Department. They will provide utility markings for renovations and new construction. You will need to provide your name, address, timeframe, and type of construction/renovation (addition, pool, in-law apartment, etc.)

Or, contact Dig Safe®, a not-for-profit clearinghouse that notifies participating utility companies of your plans to dig. In turn, these utilities (or their contract locating companies) respond to mark out the location of their underground facilities. Dial 811 or visit www.digsafe.com.

RI law requires you give at least 72 hours of notice – not including weekends and legal holidays.

Sewer Permit

To obtain a sewer permit, please follow these steps.

  • Obtain a sewer permit from the Narragansett Bay Commission. Click here for details.
  • Bring the approved permit to the Public Works/Sewer Department located on the second floor of Town Hall, 45 Broad Street.
  • The clerk with the help you complete the form. Be sure to bring the following documentation.
    • Dwelling type
    • Contractor’s contact information
    • Address for permit
    • Homeowner’s contact information

Permit fee varies based on the number of units.
